Casino Wrap-Up

6 Jun

If the comments from our guests are any measure, I’d say that our first ever Casino night and auction went over splendidly. The place looked fantastic, the crowd had a great time playing the casino games, and we raised the MOST MONEY EVER!

(The only downfall is the sore arm’s we have from patting ourselves on the back!)

It was such a great success that we’re already looking forward to hosting the event again next year.

For those of you that were at the event we’d welcome any comments you might have about the occasion. (And even if you weren’t there we still love to hear your comments too!)

Lucky Winner Announced At Course Fair

3 Mar

Ticket Giveaway at Career FairWith the date for Casino Night and Auction fast approaching, a couple of us Friends set up camp at the HTHS Course Fair. We offered a chance to win free tickets for the March 23rd event, and many of you stopped by and filled out a ballot. We’re happy to announce that from those entries a lucky winner was drawn! Congrats to Kyle Graham, you’ve won 2 free tickets.

Hey, free tickets are great, but what makes this even better is that with each ticket you receive $100 of Casino chips! Depending on if you’re able to hang onto that stash or make it bigger at our HTHS Casino, then you’ll have the chance to exchange those chips for prizes. Who knows, maybe Mr. Graham will walk away with a 55 inch big screen TV for the trouble of filling out a ballot!

Not everyone that walked by filled out a ballot. I guess they were skeptical about entering a draw, fearful they would somehow get swindled in the deal.  They acted nervously and tried to avoid eye contact with us. When we asked, “would you like to fill out a ballot to win?” they jumped back defensively, clutching their purses or wallets for dear life.

I’m not sure why but I came up with 4 possibilities.

  1. They were burned in their past! They’re thinking “I know how this works…I go to pick up discount Disney tickets than I sit through a 45 minute pitch where they try to sell me on a timeshare condo!” Their motto: I won’t get fooled again!
  2. They’ve become disillusioned with free draws! They flashback to that time when they filled out a ballot for an iPad…spent hours researching all the best apps for it, waited by the phone for the call. They had their heart set on it, and when they don’t win something inside them just dies.
  3. They’re paranoid about signing their name. You put your name on a ballot and next thing you know the government is fracking for natural gas in your backyard.
  4. They’re suspicious of us. They wonder, “what do they want in return?” If you suspect that we have an ulterior motive, I must confess you’re right! There is something we want, and here it is. We want to let you know about our big fundraiser, Casino Night and Auction, coming up! We want to spread the word so everyone knows about it.

I want to applaud the students and their parents that attended the Course Fair this evening. Great job in taking time to think about your future careers, starting with selecting courses that will get you there. Earlier that day I’d had the opportunity to present at a business workshop. One of the other presenters said something that would make for a great quote to put on a T-Shirt…

“The world is run by those who show up!”

She was stressing the importance of being involved-specifically to join groups with similiar goals, and add your voice to make things happen in your favour. I think the words apply equally to career and business. Success doesn’t just depend on what you know or how well you do something, but also on the people that you are connected to.

Parents, this is a great lesson for our kids. Sign up, get involved, raise your hand! Get to know people and let them get to know you! Being part of a great network is a sure way to help achieve the career of your dreams!

Friends Betting It All on Casino Night

9 Feb

friends of the trojans casino night poster ver1About this time every year the Friends of the Trojans hold a major fundraiser. We talked to many people that have come out and supported this event year after year. For the most part their comments were kind, but they left us with this suggestion-“you should try something new”.

Well, we  listened in a big way!

This year’s major fundraiser is Casino Night, with live and silent auction. It’ll take place Saturday, March 23rd at HTHS, with the doors opening at 7pm. We have spared no expense to bring our guests a night of top-notch gaming action. We have 10 blackjack tables, a double-roulette table, 3 Texas Hold’em tables, 3 prize wheel tables, all staffed by professional dealers. For the cost of their $15 ticket our guests will receive $100 ‘casino’ dollars to try their luck at our tables. But guests won’t be playing just for the fun of it-there will be nice prizes up for grabs too!

For those that enjoy our live and silent auctions every year, don’t fret – we are bringing them back again this year for your shopping pleasure. The friends members are out in force, canvasing the local business community for many items and gift cards that have typically totalled over $15,000!

It’s going to be so much fun, we just can’t wait to host this thing! Get together with your friends and make plans to come out and join the party. You can get tickets by emailing <mail@FriendsOfTheTrojans.ca> or call 850-2893.

Friends Commit To New HTHS Field

9 Feb

In the unlikely event that you haven’t heard, there are plans in the works to build a new artificial turf field at Harrison Trimble High School. The Friends of the Trojans think the opportunity to have this facility at our school is a great thing. When we were approached by the Woody Hayes Field Committee we came forth with a big show of support…25,000 big, actually!

In a bold move the committee has promised $25,000 towards the field’s costs over the next 5 years. Just to be clear, we don’t have this money to give yet. We are pledging to work hard through our fundraising efforts to meet this total. The decision to do this, to give every penny that was asked of us, was not an easy one to make. It may mean sacrificing some of our other worthy contributions. This is the most money the group has ever committed before. So it’s understandable that at the Friends meeting there was some back and forth “discussion” that took place (I still have the bite marks)! But the members felt confident that the construction of this new field is the most important thing to happen at HTHS in our time here, and we want to be a part of it.

It’s easy to single out the sports teams as being the big winners with having this facility in their backyard, but there are less obvious blessings as well. The field will be a lasting source of pride-it will showcase HTHS to it’s many visitors; it will promote fundraising opputunities; it’ll be a gathering place for the Trojan community. My daughter is already excited about what it will be like hosting Homecoming next year at our brand  new shiny facility!

Above all else, what convinced the Friends of the Trojans to go ahead with a commitment of this size was what we’re hearing from everyone else – the parents, students, alumini  and Trimble supporters. People told us again and again that the new Woody Hayes field was a top priority that they strongly supported. So with a determined group this size behind us we’re ready to unveil our big spring fundraiser. It’s going to be a big deal…something totally new that we haven’t done before! Stay tuned!

Presidential Inauguration Comes Off Without A Hitch

2 Feb

The Friends of the Trojans have a new President, but in stark contrast to the recent Amercian Presidential Inauguration for Obama’s second term, there was no lip-syncing controversy at our inauguration!

The Friends of the Trojans are pleased to announce the position of President has been graciously accepted by Darlene Tozer. It took a little arm-twisting, but Darlene is excited to assume the new role. She brings with her a bundle of energy and enthusiasm, and some fresh ideas. She takes over from Karen Foster who has been serving as President for the past year and a half. Karen has been a tireless worker for the committee, and under her leadership the group ran a flawless fundraising Auction,Dinner & Dance last year, and she succeeded in adding a second major fundraiser for the Friends, the Homecoming Tailgate Party. Karen now assumes the position of Past-President, so she is still very much involved in the committee…she ain’t off the hook yet!

As new President, one of Darlene’s main objectives is to bring some new members to the Friends of the Trojans. So if you’re pals don’t be surprised if Darlene works her charm and gets you to come out. She has some stuff in the works that is new and exciting, and …well you’ll just have to stay tuned to see what she has planned next!

Attendees will be treated to a Molson Beverage, Vito’s Pizza, entertainment, door prizes, and a fantastic venue overlooking the field to enjoy the homecoming football action. School Year Has Begun

11 Sep

The new school year has begun at Harrison Trimble, and so have the Friends of the Trojans! The inaugural meeting of the 2012-13 school year was held on Sept. 10th, and the returning members were glad to welcome many new faces to the group. It’s always fun to bring in new members and have a fresh outlook, and everyone is re-energized with new ideas around the table. If you missed the meeting but still want to participate, don’t fret, it’s never too late. The Friends next meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Tuesday, October 2nd, and takes place as always in the HTHS staff room across from the office. If you have any questions feel free to email President Karen Foster <karenfos5@hotmail.com> or Vice President Kim Boucher <rodkim@rogers.com>.

Our first announcement is that the Friends will be hosting the HTHS Alumni Homecoming Tail Gate Party. This hugely popular event takes place on the Friday before Thanksgiving, Oct 5th, and coincides with “Homecoming” football games. The get together is at Rocky Stone Field at the Moncton Football Asscociation’s SportHall. There are a limited number of tickets for this, so if you are interested in scoring some you can email one of the Friends’ executive above and reserve some today. The tickets are $25, and that will get you Molson beverages and Vito’s food and access to the best party in town. We’ll have more details for you soon.

Auction Wrap-Up

1 Apr

The Friends of the Trojans Dinner, Auction & Dance went off without a hitch on Sat., March 24th. We were glad to see a good crowd on hand for this, our one and only fundraiser for the year. Although attendance was down somewhat from previous years, our guests for the evening were very busy at the auction tables, and most importantly every one of the silent and main auction items found a buyer.

Thank you to everyone that came out and supported this event.

Auction Is Here, Check Out These Hidden Gems

23 Mar

Our long waited dinner, auction and dance is tomorrow evening, and ever since the first attempt got postponed due to a “phantom” storm that never materialized, I feared that fate would wallop us with the real thing on our make-up date March 24th. Instead we’ve got just the opposite weather-wise – it seems all of a sudden we’ve been catapulted into summer! This week we’ve seen record-breaking temperatures, kids playing out on their lawns, deck furniture put out, folks in the streets wearing T-shirts and shorts. Everyone is happy, happy – maybe the auction date should be permanently moved to the first of Spring?

When people are feeling this good they want to get together and celebrate, so it makes sense they’ll want to come to the Friends of the Trojans auction and bid on stuff. If you’ve taken the opportunity to download the auction program maybe you’ve already scoped out the items you’ll be watching Saturday evening. But listen, if you haven’t seen the auction program, or suffer eyestrain reading over the long list of items, don’t worry! I’m here to offer my assistance. I’ll be your guide on the safari, so to speak, as you set out to hunt for big game (and keep you safe from stampeding rhinos)! Because there is so much stuff it’s easy to overlook some good deals, so I’m going to scan through the list of items and call your attention to some hidden gems.

Maybe you’re someone who keeps their car neat and tidy and always smelling fresh. If so you can skip ahead to the next paragraph. If on the other hand maybe you’re more like my wife and me – our vehicle looks like a dorm room shared by freshmen guys enrolled in a liberal arts program. When you’re on the road all the time for sports your car gets really lived in. Mine has cleat prints on the ceiling, sticky residue in the beverage holders, trash everywhere including an assortment dishes and cutlery pilfered from our kitchen. What my vehicle needs is a good cleaning, and the auction is just the place to get a great deal on a detailing. Courtesy of Taylor Ford, we have not one, not two, but three certificates for a car detailing! Imagine having your car look and smell like brand new again! Each is a $129 dollar value, and you just know you can get a good deal there.

If you like movies as I do, you may notice that a good caper flick often involves a safety deposit box. I’ve always wanted to have a safety deposit box, maybe just because I think it would be cool. It would be better if I had some valuables to store in the safety deposit box, like some German bonds or precious jewels. If you share my romantic fascination with a safety deposit box, or even if you could just really use one, you should check this out. Thanks to Advanced Savings Credit Union we have 3 certificates up for grabs for a one-year safety deposit box rentals.

The auction is loaded with practical and useful items (yawn!) but I’m not interested in any of that! I want to play with toys, and one toy I never got (‘cause Santa is mean) is a remote control helicopter. So you can imagine my eyes light up when I saw someone walk in with the Blade MCX2! We have Remington Home Leisure to thank for this, but to call it a toy would be a grave disservice. This is a sophisticated aeronautic leisure device, utilizing a 2.4GHz transmitter and complete with a battery charger. Armed forces cadet programs use these to demonstrate aeronautic principles and train future pilots. I just want it to terrorize the pets in my neighbourhood! This is a $150 dollar value, so don’t wait for Santa to bring home the goods or you’ll end up disappointed like me.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to have a nice family photo taken. Maybe you’ve always wanted a family photo in which you actually look good! Well you’re in luck thanks to Photo Evolutions – they’ve donated a family photo session plus print, with renowned photographer Jim Miller. A trip to his studio is a treat, and he and his assistant are fun and know all the tricks and digital wizardry for making anyone look stunning.

Up to this point I haven’t focused at all on what appeals to the ladies out there. If I know women, I’d say that is anything that smells really pretty or can be used to curl hair (if your hair is straight) or straighten hair (if you hair is curly!). To make it even more attractive to the female gender we wrap it in shiny foil and decorate it with curly ribbon (let me know if you find any of this offensive). This is a gift basket full of Calvin Klein Eternity fragrance products courtesy of Sears Cosmetics. These are top of the line cosmetic products, not at all like the cheap brand perfumes I buy Mom for Mother’s Day. There are also cosmetic, body and health gift baskets from Shoppers Drug Mart in Elmwood, Jean Coutu on Mountain Road, and Ford’s Apothecary. There is also an excellent curling iron up for grabs thanks to hair salon Shear Envy. It’s a triple-barrel iron from Hot Tools Titanium, and if you’re a guy like me, “triple-barrel” sounds like some serious artillery to point at your head!

Brine’s decorating has contributed something that will make chocolate lovers swoon. Here is a chocolate gift basket that is adorned with so much delicious and beautiful chocolate pieces it has to be seen to be believed. There is so much chocolate inside this thing it actually has a warning sticker that reads, “this basket contains enough chocolate to seriously harm a child”. You know that scene in the prison where the female lawyer in a sexy skirt shows up to meet with her client, and all the inmates go berserk reaching through the bars? Yeah, well that’s the same reaction you’ll get with this chocolate basket if you go anywhere near a room full of kids.

If you like dining out you’ll be glad to know we have some good deals featured for you. We’ve got gift certificates for Pisces, TRIIIO, Garden Breeze, Boston Pizza and Deluxe French Fries. If you’d like to do the cooking yourself, there are gift certificates for Sobeys, Rinzler’s and the Old Fashion Meat Market available. You’ll want to pair that with some nice wine, so you might want to bid on one of the $50 NB Liquor gift cards courtesy from Grant Thornton. You’ll want a nice place setting if you’re having company over, so check out our Paderno 12 Piece knife and fork set. For dessert we have 2 candy baskets up for bid, a dozen cupcakes from The Cake Box, as well as a coffee collection from Second Cup on Mountain Road.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I haven’t mentioned the main auction items, or the items on the high-end table, the rare Olympic Lululemon hoodie, the Curl Moncton Ice Rental, the $300 Chartwells Caf-Cash (great for keeping your kids out of your wallet looking for lunch money), the Nikon Coolpix camera, the Animal Hospital Exam and vaccinations, all the great Trojan Trend wear. Ok enough, so if you want to know everything just head on over to the HTHS on March 24th , the doors open at 6pm and dinner’s at 6:30pm. Tickets are $15, and plenty are still available, and can be gotten at the door. Can’t wait to see you!

Auction Program Now Available For Download

1 Mar

You can check out all the items that will be up for bids at the Dinner, Auction & Dance by downloading our event program (just click here).

The local area businesses that support us have outdone themselves this year. You’ll find a treasure trove of excellent merchandise, fantastic deals on services, and dozens of popular gift cards. It safe to say there is something for everyone.

We just have one problem…TOO MUCH STUFF! (not enough people!). We still have plenty of tickets available for the March 24th event, and we’d hate to see empty chairs with all this loot up for grabs. Who is going to help us out by taking some of this stuff home (because we don’t want to pack it up again!)

Tickets for the event are only $15.00 each and can be picked up either from Janice at the Harrison Trimble Office, from a student, or by contacting Karen Foster, 384-4951 (h) Karen.foster@nbed.nb.ca.
