Auction Items Value Reaches $22,500

9 Apr

It’s our last push to spread the word about the Casino Night and Auction that takes place this weekend, Sat. Apr 12th.
Tickets are available at the HTHS office for $10. There are still auction items coming in, but the amount and quality of stuff that we’ve got so far is awesome! As of this moment the dollar value for everything in both silent and live auction is a whopping $22,500!

Remember our live auction event starts up at around 9pm, and we’re pleased to welcome back Tom Badger as our auctioneer. We’ve brought back some past favourites, like 2 Wildcats Flex packs and Grad Dorm Package and the VIA rail package and the Molson Room Tour. In addition we’ve added some very exciting new items this year. We’ve got a Patriot ticket bundle for 4, a pair of Montreal Canadian tickets for next season, a Dentist Teeth Whitening package, and a 21 Speed Mountain Bike.

Our “Pick of the Lot” draw is back again. Only 100 tickets are sold, and the winner gets their pick of any of the auction items. Recall last year’s winner took “Wine For A Year”; well, this year the prize is back, only new and improved – we have a Home Bar Kit valued at $1000 that includes a wide assortment of fine wines, spirits and bar accessories…everything you need to stock the bar of your dreams.

You can check out the complete list of auction items received so far.

With your ticket you’ll receive $100 Casino chips to play with. At the end of the night you’ll be able to use those Casino chips to bid for some very nice auction items in our first ever Casino auction.

And before you ask, yes we still have tickets available. It seems every year we have way more stuff to give out then there are people in attendance, and this year is no different. But less people equal more savings!

Friends Casino Night Tickets Single 2014

Casino Night & Auction Tickets Buy Now For $10

26 Mar

Last year the Friends of the Trojans hosted their first ever Casino Night and Auction. By the end of the night we were pretty sure we had a winning formula; guests stayed later then ever, the bar was crazy busy, the casino tables were packed. Someone said it was the best party ever held in a high school gymnasium (admittedly that same lady had to be helped to their car), but I think her slurred comment was dead on.

It was such a great time we knew we had to do it again. But we couldn’t just settle for keeping things the same, this group is all about raising the bar. We were determined to make this year’s Casino Night and Auction even better than last year, but how? The Friends of the Trojans got together at Cheers and debated all the ways to make this happen. It was the third round of drinks and we were getting nowhere, when someone burped and said, “how about dropping drop the price to 10 bucks?” What a great idea!

The Casino Night & Auction is being held on Saturday, April 12th. It’s at the Harrison Trimble Gymnasium, and the doors open at 7:00 pm. If you buy your tickets before the event they’re $10 ($15 at the door). With each ticket you receive $100 dollars of Casino money to play with. You can gamble and try to increase your loot, or maybe you just want to hang on to it, because at the end of the night that fake money could win you real prizes. This is how: we’re offering items up for bid in our first ever Casino money auction!

We love to have fun, but as always this event is all about raising funds for the students of Harrison Trimble. So we encourage HTHS parents and alumni to come out and support us, and in turn support our favourite high school! Hypnosis No Joke: Secrets of the Mind Part 1

7 Jan

What if I said that the most potent and sophisticated entity in all the universe is known to exist right here on Earth? In fact it can be found in the very room you’re reading this in! It’s something so amazing it’s considered to be the crowning glory of all creation. This thing, this fantastical arrangement of atoms, is in your possession right now. Heck, I have one too. No, it’s not the new iPhone! Rather it’s the human mind, and when it comes to an understanding of how it accomplishes what it does, scientists are pretty much baffled.

What makes this such a delightful irony is that it shouldn’t be so difficult should it? It’s not like you need an expensive lab, or a Large Hadron Particle Collider in your backyard to do experiments. Everyone, scientists and laypersons included, comes with a mind that they know inside and out, and they are able to study it any time they like! So what is it about how the mind works that is such a mystery?

Now when I say that science can’t explain how people’s minds works, I don’t mean in the pseudo-psychology sense, as in “What’s wrong with Cindy’s brain! She won’t break up with her boyfriend even though it’s obvious that he’s all wrong for her!” One example of what I’m referring to is the phenomena of consciousness.

Consciousness is that aspect of mind that I don’t have to explain, because unless you’re a zombie you know what I’m talking about. It’s our awareness, not just of the outside world as it is filtered through our senses, but also of what’s going on between our ears. It’s that sense of self, and our free will: our ability to control what our bodies do, but also to seemingly direct our thoughts too. I can even point to the place where it seems to be, the so-called “seat of consciousness”: inside my skull and just behind my eyeballs! It’s weird if you consider how absurd it would be if instead it was someplace else, like in my big toe!

What is much harder to explain is why we are conscious at all. Is it something you must possess to be intelligent, (because we are Earth’s super-geniuses don’t you know)? Or is it merely a byproduct of our brain activity, like the creme foam that sits on top of my latte (pleasant but unnecessary)? Does consciousness come in degrees, like a consciousness scale, where presumably I score higher than my dog, and he’s comes ahead of say, a mosquito? Or is is consciousness something that either you have it or you don’t (like a butterfly tattoo on your left cheek)?

Most of us would probably concede that consciousness is crucial to our survival as human beings. So it would be insightful to gain a better understand of how it works. One way is through hypnosis, a very special, altered form of consciousness. When you see first-hand how hypnosis changes the rules that govern how our minds normally work, it’s like lifting the curtain and peeking at what’s going on backstage.

I’ll explain how in Secrets of the Mind Part 2, and until then a reminder to get your tickets for Cyrus Master Hypnotist. He performs at Harrison Trimble High on Saturday, January 18th. Hypnosis is no joke, but it will definitely be a lot of laughs!

It’s That Time Of Year Again! Homecoming Tailgate Party!!!

30 Sep

If you attend only one party all year, well frankly we think you should get out more…and what better occasion than homecoming! Of course homecoming refers to the Thanksgiving break that’s just around the corner, when those who’ve gone off to school come home to feast and do laundry.

It’s also when Moncton High and Harrison Trimble renew their fabled rivalry on the gridiron (gridiron…that’s the big green patch with all the white lines running across it…)

If you were at the Homecoming football game last year you heard the same questions over and over;  “who are those lucky people watching from the balcony? Why do they have beer? How come I’m not up there with them?”

Well those lucky people are us! It’s the Annual Homecoming Tailgate Party hosted by the Friends of the Trojans. The doors open at 6pm prior to game time. You can drop by anytime before, during and after the game. With your ticket you get…

  • Beer. One complimentary Molson beverage to get you started
  • Pizza courtesy of Vito’s
  • After game entertainment by DJ
  • Door prizes
  • Appreciation from HTHS students because all funds go towards them
  • Joy from thwarting the Purple Knights fans that can’t get in if we’re all sold out of tickets by then 😉

Get together with your friends and make plans to come out and join the party.

Tickets are $25 and you can get yours at Harrison Trimble High School or contact us <mail@FriendsOfTheTrojans.ca> or call 850-2893.

Casino Wrap-Up

6 Jun

If the comments from our guests are any measure, I’d say that our first ever Casino night and auction went over splendidly. The place looked fantastic, the crowd had a great time playing the casino games, and we raised the MOST MONEY EVER!

(The only downfall is the sore arm’s we have from patting ourselves on the back!)

It was such a great success that we’re already looking forward to hosting the event again next year.

For those of you that were at the event we’d welcome any comments you might have about the occasion. (And even if you weren’t there we still love to hear your comments too!)

Presidential Inauguration Comes Off Without A Hitch

2 Feb

The Friends of the Trojans have a new President, but in stark contrast to the recent Amercian Presidential Inauguration for Obama’s second term, there was no lip-syncing controversy at our inauguration!

The Friends of the Trojans are pleased to announce the position of President has been graciously accepted by Darlene Tozer. It took a little arm-twisting, but Darlene is excited to assume the new role. She brings with her a bundle of energy and enthusiasm, and some fresh ideas. She takes over from Karen Foster who has been serving as President for the past year and a half. Karen has been a tireless worker for the committee, and under her leadership the group ran a flawless fundraising Auction,Dinner & Dance last year, and she succeeded in adding a second major fundraiser for the Friends, the Homecoming Tailgate Party. Karen now assumes the position of Past-President, so she is still very much involved in the committee…she ain’t off the hook yet!

As new President, one of Darlene’s main objectives is to bring some new members to the Friends of the Trojans. So if you’re pals don’t be surprised if Darlene works her charm and gets you to come out. She has some stuff in the works that is new and exciting, and …well you’ll just have to stay tuned to see what she has planned next!

Tickets Still Available For Homecoming Tailgate Party

26 Sep

Tickets for the Friends of the Trojans Homecoming Tailgate Party are still available, but I can’t say for how long! The event goes on Friday, Oct. 5th, and has proved hugely popular in the past. The party kicks off at 5pm at the Moncton Football Asscociation’s Sports Hall at Rocky Stone. Attendees will be treated to a Molson Beverage, Vito’s Pizza, entertainment, door prizes, and a fantastic venue overlooking the field to enjoy the homecoming football action. Tickets are $25, and you can get yours by contacting a member of the Friends of the Trojans, Karen Foster <karenfos5@hotmail.com> or Kim Boucher <rodkim@rogers.com>. If you’re not excited by beer, pizza and football, then check your pulse! Plus, what better way to unleash your Trojan spirit than to join in the mad fun that is homecoming! Reminder that you must be 19 years or over to attend this event.

School Year Has Begun

11 Sep

The new school year has begun at Harrison Trimble, and so have the Friends of the Trojans! The inaugural meeting of the 2012-13 school year was held on Sept. 10th, and the returning members were glad to welcome many new faces to the group. It’s always fun to bring in new members and have a fresh outlook, and everyone is re-energized with new ideas around the table. If you missed the meeting but still want to participate, don’t fret, it’s never too late. The Friends next meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Tuesday, October 2nd, and takes place as always in the HTHS staff room across from the office. If you have any questions feel free to email President Karen Foster <karenfos5@hotmail.com> or Vice President Kim Boucher <rodkim@rogers.com>.

Our first announcement is that the Friends will be hosting the HTHS Alumni Homecoming Tail Gate Party. This hugely popular event takes place on the Friday before Thanksgiving, Oct 5th, and coincides with “Homecoming” football games. The get together is at Rocky Stone Field at the Moncton Football Asscociation’s SportHall. There are a limited number of tickets for this, so if you are interested in scoring some you can email one of the Friends’ executive above and reserve some today. The tickets are $25, and that will get you Molson beverages and Vito’s food and access to the best party in town. We’ll have more details for you soon.

Packed House For 50th Anniversary Teachers Variety Show

24 Feb Act from HTHS 50th Anniversary Teachers Variety Show

A big and enthusiastic crowd packed the auditorium on Feb.18th to watch the Harrison Trimble Teachers Variety Show. The was the third of four special events organized by the HTHS 50th Anniversary Committee to commemorate the school’s 50 year milestone. Present were HTHS alumni of all ages – I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Trojans grads on hand to represent all the decades that spanned those 50 years.

Early on we were advised to ‘forget that these people are teaching your kids,’ a jab at the cast featuring many current HTHS staff members. The joke was not lost on me, a proud dad of two HTHS students. My only knowledge of the “TVS” came from listening to them talk about it. The show is performed by the HTHS staff every year for the enjoyment of the students. I know it to be so popular that students would line up well in advance to snag good seats. My daughter tells the grisly tale of how she lost a toenail racing for the front row (wrong day to wear sandals!) This would be my first time to experience the madness for myself, so I laced up my steel-toed boots and sprinted up the aisle.

The Teachers Variety Show is a series of skits, inspired by TV variety shows of yesteryear. You get a broad mix of entertainment; vaudeville style comedy, musical parodies, and classic Saturday Night Live characters recreated on stage. You never know what you’re going to get when the curtain goes up. The performers included many past and present teachers and staff at HTHS, some retirees and some that have gone on to teach at other schools (to quote the announcer) “not nearly as awesome as Trimble!”

The show kicked off with a great opening act, an homage to the Lord of the Dance. It borrowed much of the magic and the style of the worldwide hit production; the other-worldly music, the mysterious costumes, lads with flutes and lasses with candles! Of course The Lord of the Dance is known for its beautiful, graceful dancing…and here too there was dancing (notice ‘beautiful’ and ‘graceful’ have been omitted). I dare anyone not to laugh (except for Michael Flatley, of course!) Click to watch a clip of the opening act.

Within the walls of Trimble the acts that followed are well known standards. My daughter, Grad of 2011, picks out most after only a word or two. I was impressed with the quality of the entertainment, both the comedy numbers and the musical performance by the HTHS house band, “The Pedagogues”.

The audience lapped it all up, cheering especially for Hans and Frans, the two muscle-bound half-brothers that take turns ridiculing the various “girlie-men” in the audience. There were many outstanding performers; two that come to mind are “superstar” Stacey Duff as the irrepressible brat at the Catholic school, and Angus Gourley as Stuart, the annoying lad that gives his doctor fits when he goes for his needle.

What dawned on me as I sat there was what a cherished institution the Teachers Variety Show is. As part of the show the MC’s would comment on each act, saying a few things about its history and when it was first performed. I learned that the TVS has been around a long time! The special anniversary edition promised to re-enact the most popular and endearing skits from throughout the show’s history. People in the audience could recognize the acts from when they went to Trimble. Sometimes as soon as they heard the title they knew what was in store. If the sketch called for audience participation, they knew to cheer or boo or yell something, in perfect timing with the actors on stage!

The turnout on this night, and the enthusiasm of the people in the seats, speaks to the impact the Teachers Variety Show has made on Trimble’s students. What an impression this naughty spectacle makes on kids, to see their teachers up on stage working so hard to make them laugh. “Wow, my teachers aren’t afraid to stand up in front of everyone and make fools of themselves!” It must have done wonders to take the pressure off being a teenager. It would make them feel better about themselves and about being a part of HTHS. What a great way to bring them into the fold, to initiate them and make them feel like they belong. Heck, I cracked up watching Judy Vautour as “The Farmer’s Daughter” and now I feel like a Trojan too!

At the end of the show I’m reminded of that line again -“try to forget they’re teaching your kids!” It implies we shouldn’t trust these folks with the serious job of EDUCATION. But I’m left with the exact opposite conclusion. I’m blown away by the creativity, talent, sharp wits and joyful energy I see on stage. Anyone that can bring some of that into the classroom, I applaud.

For me the show is another piece to a puzzle that first caught my attention back when I first stepped in the school. I was a parent of a grade 8 child about to make that scary leap into high school, and I walked away from that “Welcome To HTHS” night saying, “Wow, this place is awesome!”

Trimble has great school spirit, and it’s obviously been that way for a long time, but where does it come from? Does Trojan Spirit come from the building itself, now proudly 50 years old?  Heck no, the spirit comes from the people of HTHS. It comes from the staff, and also from the students and from the parents and from the past Trojans too. And one way you get infected is at the annual institution known as the Teachers Variety Show. So when they line up this year the Grade 9’s might think they’re just here to share a laugh, but actually they’re here to be converted into lifelong Trojans.

Dinner, Dance & Auction Postponed (No kids, not all Snow Days are good!)

24 Feb

Unfortunately the Friends of the Trojans Dinner, Dance & Auction scheduled for Sat. Feb 25th has been postponed due to the winter storm. With the bad weather forecast to hit Moncton on Saturday, District 2 has instructed us that the school will be closed. We will be posting a new date for the event by the first of next week, so please check back.

For all those that had plans to attend our auction we apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope you’ll still be joining us when we host the event in March. We’re certainly disappointed as well, but the truckloads of donated items we had ready to put up for auction are safely locked away! If there is a blessing here is that we will be able to get the word out to more people about the really fantastic selection of items we have, and the great deals that our guests will enjoy. Check back here next week and we’ll share the details!
